E in Cursive: How to Write It

Lowercase e is one of the first letters worth drilling, because the little loop shows up inside other letters later. Keep it small. A big loop becomes an l.

e

The letterforms on this page are rendered in Cedarville Cursive, an open-source font — school styles like Zaner-Bloser or D'Nealian differ in details. Treat the steps as the source of truth for stroke order; let the sample show you one possible shape.

Write it step by step

  1. 1Start the cursive e on the baseline and swing up toward the midline in a shallow curve.
  2. 2Just under the midline, loop left into a small eye, then around so the stroke crosses itself.
  3. 3Exit to the right along the midline. The loop should be no taller than the letter a.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • A loop the size of l. If the eye reaches the headline, you have left the e family.
  • An open curve with no eye. That is a c. The stroke has to cross itself.
  • Sitting the whole letter on the baseline with no entry. e needs the swing up so it can join from the letter before.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the cursive e sit on the lines?

The loop lives on the midline. The entry starts on the baseline, but the letter itself should not fill the whole space up to the headline.

Does cursive e connect?

Yes. The exit runs along the midline into the next letter, which is higher than the exit of a or i. That high join is why see feels smooth and the feels slightly different.

How is cursive e different from cursive l?

Same idea, different address. l loops between the headline and the baseline. e loops in the small band under the midline. Drill a row of e then a row of l so the heights separate.
