Capital O in Cursive: How to Write It
Capital O is the plain closed oval at full height. No stem, no crossbar. The work is closing it and giving it the same slant as the rest of the page.
O
The letterforms on this page are rendered in Cedarville Cursive, an open-source font — school styles like Zaner-Bloser or D'Nealian differ in details. Treat the steps as the source of truth for stroke order; let the sample show you one possible shape.
Write it step by step
- 1For capital O, start near the headline and circle left and down to the baseline.
- 2Round the bottom and come up the right side.
- 3Close the oval at the top. A small overlap is better than a gap. Lift, without a long exit.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A gap on the right, which turns O into capital C.
- An oval no taller than lowercase o. Capitals use the headline.
- A lead-out that drops to the baseline and starts a lowercase a. Stop when the oval closes.

Frequently asked questions
Does cursive capital O connect?
No. Close it and lift. An exit stroke is how O turns into Q or into a joined lowercase letter. The next letter starts on its own.
How is capital O different from capital A?
A has a clearer entry and a more pointed or leaning close. O is the simpler oval. If you are unsure which you wrote, look for A's lead-in at the top left.
How is capital O different from Q?
Q adds a tail that crosses or sits on the baseline. O does not. If there is a stroke outside the oval, it is no longer O.
