The letterforms on this page are rendered in Cedarville Cursive, an open-source font — school styles like Zaner-Bloser or D'Nealian differ in details. Treat the steps as the source of truth for stroke order; let the sample show you one possible shape.
Write it step by step
- 1For capital P, pull a stem from the headline down to the baseline.
- 2From the top of the stem, swing one bowl out to the right and back to the stem.
- 3Close the bowl at or slightly above the midline. Stop. There is no second bowl and no descender.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A second bowl below the first. That is capital B.
- A stem that continues under the baseline. Capital P does not descend.
- A bowl that never returns to the stem, so the letter looks like a capital D missing its close, or a loose curve.

Frequently asked questions
Does cursive capital P connect?
No. The bowl ends on the stem. Leave the next letter to start by itself.
How is capital P different from capital B?
Count the bowls. P has one, in the top half. B has two, and the lower one is bigger. One extra curve is the whole difference.
How is capital P different from lowercase p?
Lowercase p descends below the line and finishes with a small arch. Capital P is tall, closed at the top, and its stem stops on the baseline.
