Free printable lined paper: college ruled, wide ruled & handwriting
You run out of lined paper at 9pm the night before school starts. Or you need one page of graph paper, and stores sell it in 100-sheet packs. Or your kid's teacher asks for "three-line paper" and you have no idea what that is.
All solvable with a printer: here's how to generate free printable lined paper — college ruled, wide ruled, graph, and three-line handwriting paper — in exactly the size and color you need, as a crisp PDF.
Pick your paper type
| Type | Spacing | Who uses it |
|---|---|---|
| College ruled | 9/32 in (7.1 mm) | Middle school and up |
| Narrow ruled | 1/4 in (6.4 mm), 41 lines on Letter | When college ruled still feels roomy |
| Wide ruled | 11/32 in (8.7 mm) | Elementary school |
| Large print | 1/2 in (12.7 mm), 20 lines on Letter | Low vision, or a bigger target than wide ruled |
| Graph paper | 1/4 in squares | Math, science, a small diagram |
| Handwriting (3-line) | 12 lines on Letter, dashed midline | Preschool–1st grade letter practice |
| Blank | — | Drawing, diagrams, covers |
Open the printable paper generator, tap a type, and the preview redraws instantly.
College-ruled US Letter holds about 220 words on one side at a normal handwriting size. Wide ruled holds fewer, around 180. If the assignment is already written, the handwriting page calculator counts the sheets for that paper before you print the blank page.
Tune it like a print shop would
Three settings do most of the work:
- Line spacing — the default sits near college-ruled spacing; slide it wider for young writers. For graph paper, the same slider sets the square size;
- Line color — classic pale blue prints much lighter than you'd expect. If the lines overpower the writing (common with dyslexic or low-vision students), switch to light gray;
- Red margin — the vertical line on the left, like a legal pad. Toggle it off for full-width pages or hole-punched binders.
Then choose Letter (8.5×11") or A4 — Letter is the US default — and download the PDF. The page is drawn at printer resolution, so lines come out crisp, not blurry-scan crisp.
The handwriting paper most parents are actually looking for
"Three-line paper" (top line, dashed middle line, baseline) is the standard for teaching letter formation — the dashed line shows where lowercase letters stop, and the top line catches tall letters like b and k.
If you're not sure how to explain it to your child, read kindergarten handwriting paper, explained — and if you want those same three lines with your child's name printed on them to trace, use the name tracing generator instead; it's the same band system with the words filled in.
Why printable beats buying a pack
- Never fully out: one ream of printer paper = months of emergency paper;
- Right spacing every time: no more wide-ruled-for-a-college-student mistakes;
- Cheap experiments: gray lines, no margin, half-size grid — try settings you'd never find in a store;
- Nothing to store: print two of what you need, not twenty.
Tested, with honest limitations
- Spacing values are close approximations of standard ruling, not manufacturing-exact — fine for notes and homework, don't use them to calibrate lab equipment;
- The margin line sits about ¾" from the left edge (narrower than a legal pad's); flip the toggle off if you need the full margin for punching;
- Each download is one page — print the PDF multiple times or use your printer's "copies" setting for stacks.
People also ask
- Is this printable lined paper free? Yes — no signup, no watermark, unlimited PDFs.
- What's the difference between college ruled and wide ruled? College ruled lines are ~7mm apart; wide ruled ~8.7mm. Younger students get wide ruled because their handwriting is larger.
- Can I print graph paper with custom square sizes? Yes — the grid size slider runs from small squares up to half-inch grids.
- Does it work for A4 outside the US? Yes — pick A4 in the page size toggle before downloading.
- How many words fit on one handwritten page? About 220 words on one side of college-ruled US Letter. Count the sheets for your own text.
